It's here, the

LitterWeek!

A fun and interactive week to engage schools and wider society in citizen science

THE GOAL

We want to create a detailed map of the litter problem.

But we need a small help from big numbers of people.

So, we created The LitterWeek Challenge to who can collect the most amount of litter data in a week! As a reward for helping us collect data, we will offer prizes to whoever can collect the most data. Prizes will be announced in 2022 to various groups and individuals from Ireland (and maybe the world).

Starting in your community, just a couple of photos from your next walk will help crowdsource a huge open source citizen science database on the litter epidemic.

We hope you will join us for LitterWeek!

Good luck!

THE CHALLENGE

How littered is your street? How littered is your neighbourhood? How littered is your city? How littered is your country? What are the main types of litter we see in our places?

For the duration of LitterWeek, we will be hosting a competition to see what school, what business, or what group of friends, and what individual can collect the most data on litter.

The challenge is for you and your team to complete the daily citizen science tasks and follow the educational activity plan throughout the week.

Can you finish all the activities, be the one who has collected the most data, or come up with the best solutions to the litter problem at the end of the week?

Challenged accepted!

THE TOOLS

Citizen science is the tool to actively engage you in the scientific endeavour to generate new knowledge and understanding. OpenLitterMap is a ready-to-use information system that enables the collection, processing, and visualisation of data to create opportunities for citizen science engagement in monitoring waste pollution.

With the OpenLitterMap app and the daily lessons from the educational activity programme available here, you can help map as much data on litter as possible during a single week, and more easily tackle the problem collaboratively.

Take a photo! Tag the litter! Share openly your data! Discuss with your community your results and solutions!

THE RULES

As part of your school, company or neighbourhood you have to join a one-week challenge which will be led by an assigned LitterWeek Ambassador. Teams will be formed among your colleagues and friends, and everyone must actively participate throughout the week.

To be eligible for the prizes at the end of the week: You must use the OpenLitterMap app to perform the tasks of identifying, tagging and collecting litter within the competition area. You must also complete on time each of the educational activities that will be presented each day.

It’s a must: Have fun! learn! discover ways to take care of your environment!
